Follow the path of the unsafe, independent thinker. Expose your ideas to the danger of controversy. Speak your mind and fear less the label of "crackpot" than the stigma of conformity. -- Thomas J. Watson, Sr.

Alwatanie

I’m looking at the profiles of “Alwatanie” group, the 4-woman group that are running for seats on the board of the Eastern Province Chamber of Commerce. I am really excited about them running and winning seats. You could argue that of the many individuals running for seats, there are some individuals who might be more qualified, as businesspeople, to be board members. I do not know any of them well enough to judge, but I acknowledge the possibility. However, I would ague that business-insight and experience are not the only important factors determining the effectiveness of a board; other factors are just as important. Diversity is very important for any board, or else, we would just pick the best person among the board members and give them total control. Businesswomen would bring that to the boardroom. They would bring in a different set of business experiences and lessons that they’ve learned by operating businesses in Saudi Arabia. Also, they would represent the views and have a better understanding of the needs of other businesswomen, a large and growing business group in our country and region. Finally, they would help change society’s misperceptions of the role of women and what they can and can’t do and what they should and shouldn’t do.

Hajj

I’m back from Hajj, a very interesting experience I must say. To me, the most amazing part of it was “disconnecting” from everything that’s going on in my life and clearing up my mind. I didn’t think it would be like this, but the amount of time we had meant that we could sit and think of our lives and ourselves. I want to say I highly recommend it, but if you’re a Muslim it’s already a must so my recommendation is pointless, but I would highly recommend the hamla I went with, Al-Hammad. They were amazing, very well organized to a surprising point actually since we’re in Saudi. You have to make reservations with them early on, however, because they take limited numbers. Their number is (03) 842 9135 and the total cost if SAR 7,500.

Happy Eid

I’m leaving to Hajj Friday morning, so I’m wishing you all a Happy Eid in advance. I will leave you with this thought:

"Life is like a game of cards. The hand that is dealt you is determinism; the way you play it is free will."
