Saudi Arabia's women pioneers
“Are the new generation of educated, professional Saudi women who are pushing for political change a vanguard or just a ‘westernized’ elite?”
Follow the path of the unsafe, independent thinker. Expose your ideas to the danger of controversy. Speak your mind and fear less the label of "crackpot" than the stigma of conformity. -- Thomas J. Watson, Sr.

"In family law, women's problems stem from "traditions that are simply local customs rather than real Islam,"
... sad but true.. most of the "rules" around here stem from tradition.. or culture... not from islam.
"Officials have suggested the franchise may be extended to women next time round, but this will not be until 2009 at the earliest. "
please put 7093 lines under the word "may be".. we all know what "may be" means... it's also another word for "inshallah"... or "yimkin ba3dain"...
"In November 2005, the Jeddah Chamber of Commerce and Industry set a groundbreaking precedent by inviting women to campaign and vote in elections for its twelve-member board. Two of them won seats."
... jeddah 3'air... the rules of saudi do not apply on jeddah.. because women in jeddah annoy the shit out of you if they want something and they'll never shut up til they get it (a good thing, mind you)... saddly, here... they just shut up.
"Does a Bedouin woman inland have rights if she has a conflict with her husband and wants custody of her children? There are still people who would call me an infidel for talking to you with your face uncovered.""
it's not only bedouins. i know a guy at work that thinks woman who don't cover their faces or hair do that because they want any man on the street to have sex with them...
there's only one solution to this whole mess... ask tariq for it... tariq! don't you think that the method you suggested to get rid of the "people with weak souls" would also work on these people? :)
