“One must think, do they want their daughter, their sister, or their wife to appear in this way. Of course, no one would accept this…"

Totally out of context and misleading. I heard what he said in Arabic and it sounds totally different when translated with an agenda in mind.

Regarding the women in magazines, he was talking to an editor of a specific newspaper which publishes photos of young models which less and less clothes everyday. And yes, in this case, you shouldn’t want a family member to appear that way. What they claim he said shouldn’t make sense because it goes against everything he has been doing in the past couple of years.

About censorship of news critical of Saudi Arabia, that is waaaaaaaay off. All he said is not to care about what you hear in the west about your Religion and Country. They will attack us but Islam and our country could never be heart by such attacks.

Don’t jump into conclusions just in the name of supporting women rights.

Ok, I suppose I made a mistake. Do you have an Arabic source with what he said. It seems that the article misrepresented what he said.

The only thing I could find is an Associated Press story, published in the NY Times http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/17/world/middleeast/17briefs-brief-004.html

there is no sense of feminism (womens rights) in saudi arabia...so as i see it, theres no need to support us. if discourses of the female gender (produced by the media) is going to be constrained/altered ...then tell me how else can we circulate womens rights??so pointless.... considering the media is the only tool which constitutes and addresses audiences in gendered ways and which audiences deploy to pass on messages! we cant exactly rally around or drive off in strike! hahaa thats it! all we're left with is bluetooth hahahahaa

Noor,it only about publishing models with less dresses. It didn't stated that woman photos can't be published .There are whole lots of rights which are not given to woman which are far more important than this, which are granted to us by our religion but not the country .
You might also be knowing that there is no law in the constitution in KSA which prevents woman from driving .
