Independent Thoughts [alnaim.com]

Follow the path of the unsafe, independent thinker. Expose your ideas to the danger of controversy. Speak your mind and fear less the label of "crackpot" than the stigma of conformity. -- Thomas J. Watson, Sr.

Independence Day

Today, December 7th, is the 2nd anniversary of my “very early retirement” from Saudi Aramco. Time flies, ha?!

Why did you leave Saudi Armaco? I'm only asking because my Husband was thinking of applying for a job there. We are americans and he is in the air force currently fixing fighter jets. He was going to try out for soemthing in the aviation department. We were thinking that we see live else where for a while since we are still young and it doesn't hurt that saudi can give some pretty nice expat packages :) We wanted to see what living in a Muslim country was like, perhaps learn the language and visit near by countries, and we figured Saudi is a nice midddle country to base camp. So basically, I just wanted to get your view on the work atmosphere at the company etc..

Also I have invested in the 4x for over a year now and told some other muslims about the modest gains one can have that far exceed my gains in mutual funds. I was informed the 4x was haram. I'm a bit confused by that becuase I know for a fact that Saudi currency is traded on the 4x and that saudi has companies inside the kingdom that trade on the 4x about twice a week. Whats your view on the 4x. I find people who speak about it aren't really aware of what the 4x is.

    hijabisoverrated,

Saudi Aramco is a huge company with many subcultures, so it all depends on the department one wants to work at. I loved the atmosphere at the department i used to work at (Treasury), i just didn't enjoy my work. I know others who enjoy their work but hate the culture, (and i know some who hate both and others who love both but i guess you get my point)so i guess it all depends.

On Forex, I do not believe it is haram, and most clerics do not view it as haram. Whether it is haram or halal in my view (and in most clerics' views) is dependent on the kind of transactions you take in Forex. The reason the person you talked to got the impression that it is haram is probably because many clerics have some serious reservations about trading in currency futures (or futures in general) because they carry an implicit interest. So it's not Forex they're concerned about, it is futures regardless of the underlying asset. However, it is safe to say that a lot, if not most, of currency trading in Forex markets is in futures and not in spot transactions.

    m,

I've been back in saudi for almost 2.5 years (felt like 25 years), and high school feels like another lifetime. College actually feels like another lifetime. I'm still young, but I am starting to realize and feel the passage of time =)
